We are always in a state of change. We are never the same, and what was life-changing for us now would be an interesting event for our future self. At that point, it matters more what I surround myself with. If I'm always changing, then how should my growth be?
I really enjoyed this text! Similar things have been on my mind lately and it put words on some of my distinct feelings, so thank you for that<3 I have always searched for myself, i found many versions but that about maybe not life is about finding out who you are, maybe it is about finding out not knowing and be comfortable with that, that really made me think. It made me feel calm.
I felt I met some versions of my old self as you were describing yours. I guess we are too attached to them and hold them close through our diaries and journals. I myself have kept a journal since I was 11
I understand the aesthetic appeal of blending earlier versions of ourselves with the present one, yet I believe it is fundamentally mistaken. In my own essays I try to show that stereoscopy can be an alternative to nostalgia. Because like stolen wedding rings on the robber's finger, the past loses its ideal value through nostalgic eyes.
This is a wonderful piece of writing and understanding of identity. I've often found that it's harder to let things that I've made part of my identity go. And it took me a while to accept that the things that gave me joy today may not be the things I find joy in a few months from now.
The river metaphor reminds me of Heraclitus... always changing, but still recognisably itself.
have you heard of the phrase, panta rei? I loved what you wrote about sitting by a river and realizing that you share the same nature.

I was just thinking about how many different versions of myself I have been.
Sometimes I feel guilty for leaving them behind.
Love this essay!
